Debasser
Check out our exclusive interview with Debasser and listen to his mix.
So you are half of Wide records and a DJ, pretty busy at the moment then?
It has been a little busy of late. Last week we put out the new Debasser EP on WIDE, which seems to be going down really well. Plus I’m also featured on the new Balkan Vinyl release (along with another WIDE Peep – Paul Blackford). I think that’s in the shops now too.
We also have a load of new things in the pipeline which will be coming out over the following months, including another remix EP from Murderbot, some awesome new tracks from Shinra and an EP from Pain Struck Stanley Dumb. It’s all sounding frickin’ awesome, but that’s to be expected ;-)
I love it all, so not complaints
Tell us a bit about your sound what/who are your influences?
My sound is very bass driven with influences taken from the original jump of days of Drum and Bass, bits of UK Garage, touches of Techno and large portions of Electro. If I had to name actually labels and people it would be the likes of Joker Records, Two Lone Swordsmen , U.R., DJs such as Rap, Sappo, Hype and Zinc.
I was also a big ol’ Heavy Metal fan in my youth and after that I somehow moved onto nights by the likes of Escape From Samsara and Black Sheep. Somehow these sounds do occasionally creep into the mix.
Above all I’m a huge Prince fan, but I wouldn’t want to flatter myself in saying my sound compares to him!!!
What have been the best and worst gigs you’ve played?
I’ve played some awesome parties over the years, such as the now legendary Windmill parties run by the Bloc crew, a party in an abandoned cement factory somewhere in Switzerland, and some party at in S&M dungeon in East London, which was a little odd, as I tried to have a conversation with the Dominatrix that owned it and I don’t think she really appreciated my sense of humour! It’s hard to say which were the best, and I couldn’t really start naming the worst! Haha. But I know that whenever I used to go down to Bristol and play at the (sadly no more) Giant Robot nights, I would always have an amazing time. Other than that, I guess I have to say the launch party to Dark Smile will always go down as a very special time.
Where is your favourite place to go on a night off, bar, restaurant, front room?
When I’m not doing the clubbing side of things I am definitely a pub person. A proper pub with proper bitter and decent peanuts is what’s needed. In fact about 70% of the decisions and conversations with Cutlass Supreme (who I co run the label with) about WIDE Records have been in a pub. Actually, no that’s a lie, it’s 99%.
Whats your all time favourite item of clothing?
It would be one of my T-Shirts, but I don’t know which one. Probably my original Megadeth one, although I can’t really wear it anymore as it has a massive hole in the front in a rather dodgy area. I also have shit loads of Prince T-Shirts from my days as a slightly obsessive fan, but maybe I shouldn’t really be telling you that, they’re not really a good look!
I always seem to wear hoodies however, and I do really need a new one – any suggestions?
What’s the next step for the UK bass danger seeker?
I’ve started work on the next release, which I hope to have sorted by the summer. I’m also doing some more work with Input Output Inc in Sweden, and I will be doing a good few remixes for the label in the meantime.
WIDE Records has been on something of a break from doing club nights over the last few years, but it’s looking like we may well be putting on another party in London soon – so keep an eye on the website
