Love & Electrik

Fenchurch can never resist a 80s-inspired synth, which is why we’ve been following Canadian duo Love & Electrik. Making quite a name for themselves over the pond, thanks to a support slot with UK electro lady La Roux as well as some catchy disco beats, we met up with one half of the duo, Roxy (named for Roxy Music; yes that’s how cool it’s getting) to get the Love & Electrik lowdown.

Tell us a bit about Love & Electrik.

We're an electro-pop girl/boy duo from Vancouver, Canada called Kevin and Roxy. We first met online over seven years ago and have been working together ever since. The Love & Electrik story started two years ago; it was then that we really started finding our stride and crafting our signature sound, which mostly takes its inspiration from 80s pop.  We've always been obsessed and inspired by dance music, but we're also a band with vocals, synths, vocoder and talkbox so we try to achieve a certain balance between the two.

What are your influences?

For a couple of years our influences were mostly artists like Sos Band, Madonna, Debbie Deb, Nu Shooz… the list goes on. But now we're in a state of evolution and we've been listening to more current and experimental bands such as Empire Of The Sun, Little Dragon, The XX and The Juan Maclean.

We're still very much influenced by 80s music but now we're digging the more moody and emotional music like Eurythmics, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, David Bowie and Tears For Fears.

Why Fenchurch?

Fenchurch has a certain stylistic appeal that we dig; it's not too street or too dressy. It has a good balance of both. Everything we’ve seen has not only been an original design and concept but also of excellent quality.

I have family in London so I often visit and I noticed Fenchurch over there a couple years ago. It really caught my eye then so we're happy to finally be sporting Fenchurch and seeing it available locally.

What's been your best live experience?

As a whole, the Red Bull Canadian Tour we did this year with Keys N Krates and The Eh! Team was an amazing experience. We travelled from coast to coast across Canada playing 21 dates in total. We had a blast the whole time but the most memorable experiences we had would have to be Halifax, Winnipeg and Lethbridge. The crowds there were ready to party and let loose, which made us feel right at home.

We also played at the Pop Montreal Festival this year at The Just For Laughs Studios, which was one of the best live experiences ever. The crowd was really into it, waving their hands in the air and everything, so it was very epic.

What are you up to at the moment?

We’ve been developing and working with producer Chin Injeti and a management group called The Hastings Set. With them we’ve written our first single, ‘Sex Video’, which is signed to a label called Tremendous Records affiliated with Last Gang Records and run by DJ Grandtheft of Team Canada DJs. Currently it’s a digital release, but it’s soon to be released again on iTunes along with some remixes. Also, just coming off tour, we have been writing a lot and working on our next singles which we are very excited about as they will show a more personal and matured version of our sound.

Is there anything else we should know about the band?

Something that we’ve never officially spoken about but most people around us in Vancouver know is that we are indeed a couple. We're actually engaged but never really decided whether we would make that public. Things got pretty funny on tour when boys and girls would try to get close to us and the other one of us would laugh or jokingly encourage it. I guess we're so devoted to our fans that we didn't want to break their hearts... We also secretly enjoy the flattery. Sorry guys.
