Goldielocks

Introduction:
Croydon-born Goldielocks - aka Sarah Akwisombe - is setting the musical world a flutter thanks to her cutting beats and edgy lyrics. Having worked with the likes of Mutya Buena, Example and Kate Nash, we caught up with Goldielocks to get the lowdown.

How would you describe your sound?

A mix of pop, dub, electro and grime

How would you describe your style?

It's pretty eclectic and changes on a weekly basis! Some weeks I'm all about the grungy sort of look, the next week I'll be really colourful with trainers and sportswear. The next week I'll be really girly. But it's always a bit rough around the edges and never too well done.

How important do you think the relationship between music and fashion is?

I think it's a good way to reflect what you stand for, what your music is about and after all it's the first thing you usually notice about someone so you can make an instant decision on their character. I do however think that too many artists are getting signed and being the in thing purely based on their style, when their music is pretty unoriginal.

Where did the name Goldielocks come from?

It's been a nickname of mine for about six years, it usually gets shortened to Goldie but there's already a Goldie out there and I don't think he'd be too happy about me using his name!

What’s your favourite fairy tale?
Alice in Wonderland. I love the way she has so many things to discover, and little things to eat that make her shrink or grow bigger. It's a big colourful crazy world and I love it. I wish I could be her for a day.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

I've just been picked from 2000 applicants around the world to go on the Red Bull music academy in October this year. We get sent to Barcelona and will meet and work with loads of other cool musicians. A lot of well known producers and people I look up to give lectures so I'm really honoured to have been chosen.

Who would make you star struck?

Dr Dre.

Who would make up your ideal band and what would they play/do?

I'm not really into bands, but I'd have Andre 3000, Lee Scratch Perry and Dr Dre all making the beats, with me as the front woman.

In the studio or on stage?

Studio, every time! I'm not actually much of a natural performer or like being the centre of attention. I never grew up thinking I want to be on stage with everyone watching I just wanted to make music that people loved and respected. Being in the studio can be so much fun, especially if you have a bit of herbal remedy floating about. It's a totally relaxed, creative environment and always a lot of fun.

Festival or intimate gig?

I think festivals always have a great sense of I don't give a shit attitude and the atmosphere is electric. It's so inspiring to see music affect that many people. I always get really emotional, even if it's a hardcore rap act.

What are you currently working on?

I'm always working on new music for myself; I’ve been in the studio with Benga and producing for artists such as Plastic Little and Miss Oddkidd and doing lots of remixes. I also DJ a lot, promote my own club night called Hardknock Wife at The Social each month and I’m helping to manage a ska band called Mouthwash. I'm a workaholic. I'm scared of only doing one thing for the rest of my life.

What are your goals for the next six months?

To have fun, meet more amazing people, and make some motherfuckin money.
